At Digital Hollywood University, we receive a continuous stream of eye-catching, big-name guests who visit our university. These visits are evidence that our university is receiving attention throughout Japan as well as the rest of the world. With each visit, we are able to listen to valuable speeches and discussions, and our students are quite proud to host such distinguished guests.

Comic "Kimi ni Todoke" made the greatest hit in Japan and this comic become a live-action movie based on "Kimi ni Todoke". We invited Film Director Mr. Naoto Kumazawa to have a special lecture and he talked about the rule of how to make a hit movie and know-how to create the movie.

Director Hitoshi Iwamoto, Producer Shinzo Matsuhashi

At the time it went on sale, the work MW-mu- was considered to feature content too extreme, and a theme so shocking, that it was said to be a "prohibited problematic piece" and "impossible to adapt to the screen". Recently, upon the advent of this work becoming a motion picture, director Hitoshi Iwamoto and producer Shinzo Matsuhashi were invited to come speak at Digital Hollywood University. They discussed the process of creating the film version of MW, the production process, highlights of their works, the duties of directors and producers, and other topics.

Paul Mason

The film Hachiko: A Dog's Story featured an all-star cast and staff, with Richard Gere in the main role and Lasse Hallström as the director. Paul Mason, who not only handled executive producer duties, but instigated production of this film, recently came to Japan on short notice and visited our university. He spoke about behind the scenes production stories relating to the film's formation process, movie production techniques used in Hollywood, and other topics in advance of its premiere.

Producer in the Anime Production Section of the Anime Department of TV Tokyo

Fukashi Azuma

Naruto and Gintama are both popular, highly-rated anime series currently being aired on channels operated by TV Tokyo. We invited producer Fukashi Azuma, who was in charge of production for these popular anime titles and over 77 other anime series, to visit our university. He talked to us about the sequence of events and flow of production from negotiations concerning the original work, to project development, formulation of scenarios, and other steps taken leading up to the television broadcast of a series. He also discussed the duties of an anime producer working at a television station.

Satoru Matsumoto

The General Introduction to Media class deals with films, publishing, and various other media forms. We recently invited Satoru Matsumoto, the Representative Director of Bandai Channel, to visit this class as a guest. He spoke in detail to us about on-demand video distribution, which many of our students use, and the behind the scenes issues concerning this technology.

Director Chiaki Kon, Producer Yuji Matsukura

Nodame Cantabile is a title that was broadcast as a drama from September 2007 on Fuji Television, which also gained popularity as a TV anime, and sparked a huge classical music craze. Also, the sales numbers for the comic version have topped 28 million copies, showing that the momentum driving this title's popularity just won't stop. Nodame Cantabile reappeared on screen with a live-action drama filmed in 2008, and a sequel to the TV anime, called "Paris Chapter", which started airing in October of the same year. Recently, director Chiaki Kon and producer Yuji Matsukura who worked on the Nodame Cantabile anime series were invited to our university. They explained to us the production process leading to the completion of a TV anime, production pointers, secrets regarding the series, and other topics. And especially for "Nodame" fans and people who want to work in the anime industry in the future, we will present a portion of the lecture in which they talked in great detail about everything related to the particular attention given to on-the-spot production down to behind the scenes information. We will present a portion of the lecture they gave in which they talked about the behind-the-scenes details of the production of the show. This lecture is particularly geared towards those who are "Nodame" fans and those wanting to work in the animation industry in the future.

The film ICHI is a much talked about remake of the masterpiece Zatoichi, which reimagines the main character Zatoichi as a woman and features an all-star cast including Haruka Ayase, Takao Osawa, Shido Nakamura, and Yosuke Kubozuka. The person who serves as director for this film is Fumihiko Sori, who is also well-known worldwide as a CGI effects creator and as the director of Ping Pong and Vexille: 2077 Japanese Isolation. He freely talked to us at Digital Hollywood University about the behind the scenes production of ICHI in advance of its premiere.

The movie version of Yoko Kamio's original work, the legendary girl's comic Hana Yori Dango which boasts top sales in Japan, premiered recently as Hana Yori Dango F (Final). To commemorate its premiere, we invited director Yasuharu Ishii and producer Katsuaki Setoguchi to visit our university. They held a special lecture in which they discussed production secrets, the keys to flourishing in the film industry, and other topics.

Director Gregory Nava was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for his film El Norte/The Promised Land. Recently, we invited this director to our university when he came to Japan to promote his latest work. He held a special priority movie screening and a special lecture.

Glenn Vilppu has worked for major animation production studios such as Disney and Dreamworks to put into practice training aimed at creators concerning how to draw sketches. We bring to you the essence of his seminar, in which he gave thorough instructions for "the art of breathing life into characters through sketches".

Digital Hollywood University invited director Mark Osborne, who was in Japan for a film promotion, to visit, and held a "Teach-in" event to commemorate his latest movie premiere. He also brought us into the behind-the-scenes developments of the latest animation titles.

Mamoru Hosoda, director of the anime movie The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, made a guest appearance in the class "Styles of New Japan". He spoke passionately to us about the message this particular movie contains and the starting point of his production activities, while mixing his discussion with a student question and answer session.

To commemorate the premiere of his new movie Arthur and the Invisibles, director Luc Besson, who also worked on films such as The Big Blue and Léon, came to visit our university. He enthusiastically answered questions from our students, such as those concerning the possibilities of CG in films.

Uruma-san

Uruma-san, from the unit "UrumaDelvi" which became well-known through the song "Oshiri Kajiri Mushi" ("Bottom Biting Bug"), held a workshop spanning two days at our university. He instructed us on how to use the animation production software "UrumaDelvi Paint", as well as on the essential points of production.

In a special lecture, we received instruction from research professor Michihiko Suwa, a producer who has worked on many hit anime series. On the theme of the time until an anime on which he is currently working, Detective Conan, was produced As a producer who has worked on numerous hits up to his current title, Detective Conan, Suwa spoke about how to create hit content.

Masataka Matsutani of the Movie Marketing Department of Sony Pictures, a company which distributes films such as The Da Vinci Code, Spiderman, and Monster House, held a special lecture at our university.

Ms Quentin Bryce, Mr Michael Bryce

The state of Queensland, Australia is one of the study abroad destinations at Digital Hollywood University. That state's former governor (and current Governor-General of Australia) Ms. Quentin Bryce, and her husband, Mr. Michael Bryce, visited our university. They freely responded to questions asked by our students.

Yoshiki Sakurai

Yoshiki Sakurai, a screenwriter who has become popular recently due to his writing the script for the series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, made an appearance at our university. He spoke about the keys necessary to take the plunge into the animation industry, among other topics. There were also enthusiastic questions from the students, and the atmosphere in the classroom was intensely exciting.

Artist Takashi Murakami, who represents Japan on the world stage, shared episodes about his creative activities as well as about the numerous works in which he has taken part. He spoke to us for a full hour and a half on the theme of "Entrepreneurial Fine Arts", which he himself advocates.

Director Tim Burton, who has brought many huge hit films to the world, came to our university! The day he came, the media crowded into the meeting room as well, and it was hot and stuffy due to all the people. Burton mixed humor and sincerity in his answers to the students' questions.

Research Professor Shiro Sasaki, who has produced such works as Family Game, Transfer Student and Navy Love, opened a special workshop at our university.

Paul Topolos

World-famous mat painter Paul Topolos visited Digital Hollywood University. He spoke to us about the art of mat painting the backgrounds of 3D CG films, amongst others, and combined this talk with his own valuable pictures which reflected the production processes.

Taro Aso

Former Prime Minister of Japan Taro Aso is one particular politician who thoroughly understands the influence manga and other forms of media content have in carrying the power of cultural diplomacy. He visited Digital Hollywood University in 2006 when he was Foreign Minister, and ardently spoke to us about the state of Japanese cultural diplomacy.
