The curriculum allows students to study the basis of digital representations such as films, 3DCG, programming, web, design, and animations in combination. To experience the fun of producing digital work, students are exposed to practical production exercises from the first year with the aim of acquiring professional knowledge, skills, expression techniques, and business theory from the basics. As students learn of their aptitude to determine future directionality, they gain a deep sense of their expertise in seminars from the third year to establish their specialized area.

Characteristics of learning

By acquiring the flow and basics of film production, students learn comprehensively from 3DCG to other domains.

By acquiring the theory and knowledge that serves as the foundation of film production, students learn from planning, shooting and editing through the practice of creating works. Their range of expression further expands by learning other domains related to film such as 3DCG.

Deepening the understanding of film industry by learning films from a business perspective.

The course teaches students about business practices, such as the screening, distribution and advertising methods of works. It aims to foster talented personnel who can bear the future of the film industry extensively as a film director, film producer and people in charge of distribution and advertisements at film companies.

Students are dedicated to their own film production at the Hachioji production studio, which is equipped with ample facilities.

From a crane camera to greenbacks for image integration, the production studio is equipped with shooting facilities that professionals use. It also has a facility where students can lodge together so that they can devote themselves to their production works to their heart’s content.

Sample courses

Itaya seminar: Students actually engage in filming, editing and audio editing to create an assignment commercial. Their works are shown at a review where faculty members and students can share opinions proactively. The faculty provides specific guidance from a professional viewpoint.

Story production practice: Students master story production techniques and its analysis technique for novels, comics, movies and games by understanding story theory. It extensively teaches students using plot making, story composition and character setting.

Mastering advanced 3DCG skills, which are key elements for games, animations and movies.

3DCG is used in medical, product design, games, animations and movies. By learning the basis of the techniques, students acquire VFX, 3D images and other cutting-edge expression methods. Students also learn about live-action filming and CG integration techniques frequently used in movies, offering various types of expression methods.

Characteristics of learning

The world’s popular software are used to learn the latest 3DCG techniques.

Today, the 3DCG software, Maya, is one of the most used software applications in the filming and game industry. Students learn about how to use it from the ground up to create a 3DCG movie. In addition, students are also exposed to the techniques of VFX (visual effects) and 3D images.

Developing the abilities of accurately grasping three-dimensional objects to improve the 3DCG quality.

The course trains students in learning three-dimensional model making using clay, art anatomy for learning the shape and structure of the human body and drawing with the aim of developing excellent three-dimensional senses necessary for 3DCG production.

By acquiring knowledge and techniques of other domains, students’ possibilities are broadened to the maximum extent.

The course comprehensively teaches students using other domains, such as programming, game business and live-action film, in order to display their abilities in the 3DCG domain, as well as various industries and occupations.

Sample courses

Introduction to 3DCG: Students work on producing a short animation in a group setting. By producing in a group setting, students understand the flow of progress management and overall production similar to the environment of an actual production. It is also designed to develop the necessary skills.

Drawing: By eliminating preconceptions, students draw human skeletons while developing the abilities for accurate observation and drawing with pen tablets. It is designed to master the abilities to express object textures, light shade and shadows.

Graphic design

Developing flexible creativity and rich expression necessary for design professionals.

From ads, books and magazines to product packages, graphic design is found everywhere in our lives. In order to create design that draws attention and appeals to the heart, rich creativity and expression are necessary. DHU utilizes diversifying media from web to videos to develop designers who can succeed in a wide-ranging field by learning the technique of design expression, planning and the designs for increasing product value.

Characteristics of learning

Students learn the basics of design as well as software to form the base of technique that converts ideas into tangible form.

The course is designed to teach students design basics such as layouts and typography. It aims to increase creativity and design abilities through classwork for plane composition, methods, application of visual psychology and space composition. In addition, students develop the abilities of expression through drawing and expression practices.

Students are exposed to various media from the web to videos to become a designer who can play an active role in various domains.

By learning across various media from paper media, illustrations and the web to videos, students can develop their unique design in broad areas. With informality of genre, it is designed to cultivate a diverse and fresh expression regardless of genres.

A comprehensive study of design teaches students to determine attractive design.

Through actual experience from planning, brand development, advertising and the creation of presentation documents, the course helps students have a firm understanding of the entire process of design production. Students then pursue design that resonates with people.

Sample courses

Design Basics III and IV: Students learn the basic operation of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and the design rules of printed materials to create artworks. These courses are also designed to train students in learning appealing presentation technique besides design skills.

Typography: Students learn how to express and design characters functionally and impressively. By understanding the characters as an element of composing space, the goal is to master the basic of freely handling characters.

By learning from motion image production to direction, the course is designed to attain industry-ready abilities.

Japanese animations are highly appreciated overseas as it is the area that constitutes the core of the domestic content industry. DHU offers an enhanced curriculum to respond to industry trends at an early date where digitalization is on the rise. By offering an environment where students can learn various techniques from top creators, the course develops talented personnel in various domains who support the next-generation animation industry from motion image production and screenplays to movie director and producer. The goal is to equip students with the ability and practical skills to succeed extensively in and out of Japan.

Characteristics of learning

After developing observation skills, students learn the whole process from motion image production to direction.

After practicing drawing multiple times to develop observation skills, students start by learning the basis of motion image production and the principles of how people and objects move. The curriculum allows students to be exposed to the direction of artwork and animation production entirely.

Creating animations that go a step further by expanding the learning to 3DCG technology.

By learning animations and 3DCG comprehensively, students challenge a new type of animation production that uses 3DCG to draw backgrounds and characters. The course also aims to broaden the place where they can play an active role in the future by attaining knowledge in screenplay, staging and animation business.

Using the professional-use software to develop digital movie creation skills.

To respond to the digital movie technology frequently used in animation production studios, the course uses the latest software used by professionals. It aims to develop creativity through repeated practice and increase the work speed in the same way as actual job sites.

Sample courses

Animation drawing seminar: The seminar gives a demonstration of movements, such as walking and moving hands, to understand the principle of movement. Students actually draw animations on a paper placed on a light stand to make adjustments so that illustrations are actually moving.

Kuwahara seminar: Students produce high-quality animations in a team or individually. With the focus on entertainment, the seminar allows students to create unique works by hand drawing and CG, regardless of methods.

DHU offers course in which students can master cutting-edge knowledge and skills required to succeed in the industry. The goal is to acquire website construction skills, planning and operation of various services to become talented personnel who can rejuvenate the industry today and in future.

Learning website production from basics to advanced thoughtfully from the basics to advanced technology.

Web courses are divided into two areas - web design courses and coding (web programming) courses.

Students are able to learn both comprehensively or to specialize in either one. The website production project seminar ensures that students can maximize their specialized skill by working on a theme in a group setting.

The curriculum enables students to acquire composite learning to pursue new web expressions.

Students not only learn website development techniques but also the basics of design, video shooting and programming for game development. The course aims to equip students with the development techniques of various websites that incorporate videos, music and games.

Knowledge of business is required in all industries and occupations. Making a proposal in business is crucial when starting new contents or services. DHU uses actual cases to study business strategy, business planning and marketing. This introductory course is designed for students who study business for the first time. Students then choose their path from three areas of engaging in business related to ICT, starting their own business and those who aspire for an advertising business to deepen their knowledge. In this course, students are exposed to projection mapping, head mount displays specializing in virtual reality, 3D printers and wearable devices (smart watch and glasses) so that they can expand their knowledge of today’s latest technology and study expression techniques.

The curriculum covers not only the latest technology devices but also software, such as projection mapping, AR and applications. It also allows students to expose to 2D, 3D and live action images to learn about the expressions using the latest technologies.
